Sugar is a slow addictive poison

Scientists are saying that one of the most dangerous poisons is found in almost every household pantry: sugar. They suggest that selling sugar should be regulated and controlled just as with selling cigarettes and alcohol.

Now is the time to restrict our freedom to purchase sugar

Facts and numbers: North American scientists believe that sugar has contributed one way or another to more than 35 million deaths worldwide each year. Sugar triggers diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases and liver cancer, metabolic and hormonal imbalances and increases high blood pressure.

The document titled “The toxic truth about Sugar”, published in the magazine Nature, Robert Lustig, an expert on child obesity, affirmed that the United States is number one on the list for obesity problems. This problem is so wide spread that it cannot even be compared with the malnutrition issues worldwide because obesity has become a global problem that isn’t isolated to a certain area.

Sugar is found in almost every type of processed foods we consume daily. Just as with alcohol, sugar is readily available and extremely toxic. The same with Alcohol, it is often consumed without limits or boundaries. Lustig believes that we are past the point of teaching our children the benefits of following a wholesome diet, importance of daily exercise and the dangers of sugar.

Now is the time to restrict our freedom to purchase sugar, it should have a hefty tax and we should be discouraged from purchasing it. Scientists and colleagues recommend that sugar should be controlled on a State level, just as with cigarettes and alcohol. They could easily double the tax for carbonated or sweetened beverages and prohibit the sale of such items to those under the age of 18 years. Also, they could reinforce the regulations for where to place vending machines that sells sweets, chocolate bars and beverages within schools.

The amount of sugar consumed in the world within the last 50 years has tripled and now is the time to act upon the matter of sugar for the future health of the whole world.
